JOIN CUB SCOUTS

Thank you for visiting the Pack 684 website - - PACK 684 is an ACTIVE Cub Scouting Pack chartered by the St. Andrews Church, but based at Sangster Elementary School in Springfield, VA.  Many of our Scouts attend Sangster, although several attend other schools in the local area.  We are a Journey to Excellence GOLD Pack and frequent winner of the Summertime Pack Award.

BOYS and GIRLS in grades K-5 may join Pack 684 at any time by contacting our membeship chair, Rachael Myers-Ward at recruitpack684@gmail.com or our Cubmaster at cubmaster684@gmail.com. If you're new to the Scouting lingo, here's the secret to the Cub Scout Ranks:

  • Kindergarden = Lions
  • 1st Grade = Tigers
  • 2nd Grade = Wolves
  • 3rd Grade = Bears
  • 4th Grade = Webelos 1
  • 5th Grade = Webelos 2 (Arrow of Light)

Pack 684 offers assistance to families in need so that financial hardship will not prevent Scouting for any boy.  All decisions on assistance are made on a case-by-case basis and will remain a private matter between that family and the Pack leadership.

Please explore the public sections of this site to learn more about Pack 684.  You might also wish to go to BeaScout.org or Scouting.org.  If you're considering scouting, we would welcome the opportunity to have you join us for an outing and see who we are and what we do.

FROM COUNCIL EXECUTIVE - PREPARED...FOR LIFE

A message from Council’s Executive

Today’s young people have so much more to deal with than when I was young. Bullying, obesity, violence in their schools, materialism, education disparity, the rise of single parent households and severe economic hardships. These are real issues facing our children – and many of our parents and volunteers – every day. Scouting can’t solve all problems, but it can help erode them. At its core, Scouting offers a positive, empowering, educational, interactive, dynamic program that encourages team work as much as it demands personal development. It has built-in opportunities for outdoor adventures that require a certain level of fitness to reap the maximum experience. And it provides the chance for young people to learn to interact with their peers as well as with people of all ages and social, cultural and economic backgrounds.

PACK 684 HISTORY

Pack 684 was chartered first in 1985, at Newington Forest Elementary School. It was chartered as the second pack at Newington Forest – Pack 683 being the other. When Sangster opened in 1988, Pack 684 moved there along with many of the families that were shifted from Newington Forest ES to the new Sangster ES. As there was no PTA established to charter Pack 684, the pack came to be chartered by the Huntsman Square Baskin Robbins store. This was a unique arrangement unlike any other in the entire council; commercial establishments don’t usually charter BSA units. That arrangement continued until 2004, when the store changed ownership and the new owners no longer wanted to charter the pack. Our Unit Commissioner at the time was the late Bill Millward, who was a member at St. Andrews and arranged for the church to take over our charter. St. Andrews became Pack 684’s Charter Organization in June 2004.
